Why Independent
Early in my career, it became clear that politics has no place in peacekeeping. In a small community, today's offender may become tomorrow's victim — so decisions in the field and in the office have to rest on facts, evidence, and the law, never on political beliefs. That's the philosophy I bring to the Sheriff's Office every day: equal justice for all, without bias.
What I've Built
Since my appointment as Sheriff by the San Miguel County Commissioners in April 2025, I've driven forward a set of initiatives built with partners across the county — from mental health response to wildfire readiness.
A partnership with the county, fire districts, the medical center, and other local agencies to provide crisis response and follow-up care — reducing repeat crises and unnecessary incarceration.
A staged transport partnership with Guardian Transport that cut mental health crisis response times from several hours to under one hour.
21,000-gallon retrofitted water tanks placed at strategic remote sites, cutting fire engine refill time from two hours to as little as thirty minutes.
Built with the San Miguel Resource Center to train festival staff, vendors, and campground hosts to recognize and respond to predatory behavior.
Rolling out this fall, ahead of the 2027 state mandate — giving deputies a field guide to identify domestic violence survivors at greatest risk, ensuring they receive follow-up protection and support services.
Every software platform evaluated, outdated programs eliminated, and low-cost alternatives adopted — protecting taxpayer dollars without cutting service.
This November, let's continue these programs, develop new solutions, and keep San Miguel County the standard other rural agencies measure themselves against.
